Clever

As seen on Something So Clever...

Time for me to learn a little bit more about you!

Answer these questions in the comments section. Feel free to be anonymous if you are wary of stalkers.

1. Where you from? Married? Kids? (Furry or not-furry)
2. What do you do for work and play?
3. How did you discover me?
4. Are you going to any concerts/festivals this summer (and what are they)?
5. Your all time favorite Toad the Wet Sprocket song and why? (Or... just your favorite song, either one works for me!)

If you are going to the Fiona Apple concert on Saturday I'll see you there!!

Speeding

Just a reminder that the school zone speed law change goes into effect tomorrow, July 1...

House Bill 2840 Simplifies School Zone Speed Law

In 2005 the Oregon legislature acted to simplify the school laws under House Bill 2840. The Governor signed the bill into law on July 20, 2005.

The new law does away with the “At All Times” school zones -- but it doesn’t go into effect until July 1, 2006. So you will see the “At All Times” school zones until July 2006.

The new law has only two categories of school zones those adjacent and crosswalks not adjacent.

School zones on roadways adjacent to school grounds can be either: “When Flashing” or “School Days 7AM to 5PM”.

Those school zones at a school crosswalk away from school grounds can be either "When Flashing” or “When Children are Present”.

This means that if you are passing a school at 2am on a Saturday... you no longer have to slow down to 20 mph. I am all about safety especially when it comes to protecting kids, but what a stupid law that was.

I wonder, how much did it cost to install the signs indicating the 24-hour limit... and how much will it cost to CHANGE THEM BACK?

Dance

This is GREAT... I want to go there, there and there too!

Hungry?

Tonight (June 28) from 4:30pm - 6:30pm at The Blacksmith, you can taste test an assortment of appetizers and drinks! I heard they have a martini rimmed with pop rocks instead of sugar which sounds fabulous. They also have lobster corndogs, which could be either really good... or not!

Free food and drinks... how can we go wrong? See ya there, everyone!

Geek

Thanks to Lucky for stirring up old geeky memories...

Almost everyone's first programming language that they learn is BASIC (in my generation, that is). But does anyone else remember the programming languages Logo, Cobol or Fortran? I learned Logo in 3rd grade... Fun stuff! I remember trying to get the turtle to draw a hopscotch shape. I studied Cobol in college. My mom is a mainframe programmer, and they used Fortran.

I remember when Mom was in college, she learned programming on keypunch cards. You had to be really nice to the operator or she would drop the stack of cards. My sister and I collected the discarded punch cards and made confetti with the “chads”.

Stinky and Boo used to come to work with me once in a while at the newspaper in Salem, when I ran data processing jobs on the weekends. We printed labels and reports on those big tractor feed impact printers - they are so much faster than a laser printer. I still have some leftover greenbar and the kids love it. They love the perforated pages, and making banners out of the long pieces.

But I am glad we don’t still use keypunch cards - whatta mess my sister and I must have made with our confetti!

Update, 6/29 - Jake found a guy who made his window shades out of old keypunch cards.

Phone update

I emailed Sprint customer service last week, detailing the experience I described in this post. I included my contact information, including my work phone number. This morning I received the following response:

So basically, they still want me to jump through hoops and wait on hold in order to talk to someone about this problem (again). Since I have already made up my mind to switch, and my contract is up... I probably won't be wasting my time.

But my main concern and reason to contact Sprint was not in reference to the coverage problem. The issue that concerns me is that their store reps either (1) aren't trained well enough to know what the he** they are talking about or (2) don't mind lying to their customers to move their products and services.

The other thing that irritates me about the email is at the beginning he states that he would be "happy to assist" but offers no direct assistance and just gives directions to call the queue. In comparison when I need support or service from BendBroadband (our local cable provider) if I receive an email from a rep it includes their direct contact information, including their email address and phone extension. (Which has only happened when they have tried to call and can't get in touch with me directly.)

(end rant)

Moved!

Thanks to help from family and friends...

WE MOVED!

We are officially living in our new house now, and now we just have to move a few small items and finish cleaning the duplex (not-so-fondly referred to as the "storage unit").

There is still plenty on the to do list for the new house. It is not by any stretch of the imagination "done". BUT... they are all livable tasks and it is a huge deal to be done with this phase of the project.

Cheers to everyone that helped. We couldn't have done it without you!

Phone

Another great example of total lack of customer service by big business:

My current cell phone (Sprint) gets no signal at our new house. Since we are moving - this could be a problem! Fortunately my contract expires next week. This week a friend of mine was kind enough to swing by with their T-Mobile phone and it works great.

Just because I was curious... I went to the Sprint store and asked about the signal problem.

I told them the location of the new house and explained the problem. The sales guy said to solve my problem I needed ... a new phone and a roaming plan. I told him (1) I don't want a new phone and (2) why should I have to pay extra for roaming when I live in one of their local coverage areas.

He said, where is this again? I told him where the house is and he told me that the actual reason I am having a problem is because there are TOO MANY cell towers down there, so the phone is "getting confused and giving up".

I asked, what about my friend's phone that is T-Mobile? He looked at me with a sort of blank expression, then said oh they must have a new phone and be on a roaming plan!

I returned to my place of business - which happens to be the corporate headquarters for a wireless company. Since I went through the corporate training plan through my employer I know that what he told me is bunk. When I repeated this story to my co-workers they couldn't stop laughing.

Bye, Sprint!

Ribs

I am going to toot my own horn a bit here...

I'm a really good cook. I enjoy cooking and look forward to preparing meals. I am not into baking, but occasionally I will spend a day in the kitchen and end up with a large platter of goodies.

Last night I made our favorite summer meal: country style ribs, red potatoes, and asparagus. This is a "gimme" dinner for us now. It's always soooo good!!! This is also a great camping meal, because you can prepare everything ahead of time, and just throw everything down on the grill when you are ready to eat. (We always make extra taters so there are some left over to warm up for breakfast.)

SO... I thought I would share the recipes (they are SO easy) and spread some culinary joy around the 'net.

This is a little long, so click here for the recipe.

What you need:
3-5 lbs. country style ribs
2 cans beef broth
bay leaf
1 clove garlic
your favorite bbq sauce
**we prefer either bullseye or essensia deep south hickory
red potatoes (4 large, or about a dozen baby)
asparagus
olive oil
italian seasoning (or fresh herbs if you have 'em)
red pepper flakes
salt and pepper

Prep:
Pour one can of beef broth into a large stock pan. Add the ribs, bay leaf, and pressed garlic clove (if you don't have a garlic press, then finely chop it). Pour in the second can of beef broth and 6 cups of water. Bring to a low boil. Boil for about 45 minutes. Use tongs to "rearrange" the ribs periodically so they cook evenly.

Wash your vegies. If you are using larger red potatoes, cut into about 1 inch pieces. Place in bowl with about 1/2 cup water, cover and cook in the microwave for 6 minutes. Steam the asparagus for about 10 minutes (so it is still slightly crisp).

Drain potatoes and return to bowl. Drizzle with about 2T olive oil. Sprinkle with italian seasoning and red pepper flakes. If you wish you can add a clove of pressed garlic to the mixture as well. Add salt and pepper to taste. Toss the potatoes until they are covered evenly with the oil and seasonings.

Heat grill to medium. Brush your favorite BBQ sauce onto the ribs to taste (I like mine pretty saucy). Add ribs to grill. After 5 min turn the ribs over, brush on more sauce if desired, and add potatoes to grill. (Reserve the olive oil mixture that is at the bottom of the bowl.) After another 5 min turn the ribs again, brush on more sauce if desired, turn the potatoes, and add asparagus to grill. Brush the asparagus with the leftover olive oil mixture, turn and brush onto the other side. Let all cook for about 5-10 minutes.

Serve, eat and enjoy!

Home!

Final inspections were today on the new house... and we got occupancy! So we found the air mattress, threw together the few things we really really need, picked up a pizza from Bruno's... and we are HOME!

Building this house has been the toughest thing I have ever done - it has taxed all of us physically, emotionally and mentally. This project has been full of ups and downs! We have been "hands on" every step of the way, with Scott running the job. We drew the plans ourselves after finding the lot - and since then have done everything possible ourselves... including siding, building cabinets, laying hardwood floors, and cleaning (and cleaning and cleaning). It's also one of my most rewarding experiences, and I found new strength in our family and in Scott's and my relationship. I have learned so much through this experience, both about building a house and about what I want out of life. I can't imagine going through this with anyone but Scott... truly the love of my life and my partner in every way. (CHEESE!)

Stinky, Boo and Butthead - you guys are awesome and I am so proud of the home we have made together. I hope that you love your new house! Thank you for putting up with the evenings and weekends when we had to be here working on the house, and being all around great kids. (Thank goodness for Juniper Pool!)

Boo observed how nice it would be for all the kids to finally have their own rooms... and she thought it was very nice of me and Scott to share so the kids wouldn't have to. What can I say... we are all about taking one for the team!

p.s. The blinds won't be installed until Wednesday so until then... NO PEEKING!

Where?

For a Monday chuckle... do you recognize any places or people in this clip?

Where the he** are we?

EDIT: Apparently, due to overwhelming response this site has been removed. Jake is hosting a cached version on his site, click here to view it!

Hail

There was a thunderstorm on Monday bringing wind, rain and lots of hail to the area. It really was a great storm - especially the watching from inside and keeping dry part!

We had penny-sized hail at the new house:

Also there were several spots where "hail-balls" formed. They looked just like snowballs from a distance (but hurt a lot more on contact):

The rain continued off and on yesterday (Tuesday). The weather is improving though. Things are looking even better for the end of the week and the beginning of summer break!

Flight

It must be tough to be a bird.

From what we could tell, Mama Robin had three babies. One was pushed from the nest and died. This weekend, one learned to fly and left the nest. We have no idea what happened to the third baby.

So... one of "our" three babies made it out into the world. We saw s/he and Mama hopping and flying around the yard, peeping and chirping at each other. His/her orange breast feathers are starting to come in and s/he flies well, but would still rather hop or hide.

Vegas Baby... YEAH!

Macrodobe just launched their site for the annual MAX conference. This year the event will be held at The Venetian in Las Vegas this October.

Any other Central Oregonians planning to travel to this event?

Funny

Thanks to the Floyds for this one... hope it gives everyone a little Friday chuckle!

In Pharmacology, all drugs have two names, a trade name and generic name. For example, the trade name of Tylenol also has a generic name of Acetaminophen. Aleve is also called Naproxen. Amoxil is also call Amoxicillin and Advil is also called Ibuprofen.

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.

Pfizer Corp. announced today that Viagra will soon be available in liquid form and will be marketed by Pepsi Cola as a power beverage suitable for use as a mixer. It will now be possible for a man to literally pour himself a stiff one. Obviously we can no longer call this a soft drink, and it gives new meaning to the names of "cocktails", "highballs" and just a good old-fashioned "stiff drink". Pepsi will market the new concoction by the name of: MOUNT & DO.

Thought for the day: There is more money being spent on breast implants and Viagra today than on Alzheimer's research. This means that by 2040, there should be a large elderly population with perky boobs and huge erections and absolutely no recollection of what to do with them.

Zen

NERD ALERT...

I am still working on my transition from tables and learning to better use CSS. So the CSS Zen Garden was a neat find for me today. Even if you don't know (or care) what CSS is... it is fun to wander through the designs to see what the designers have come up with.

Here's my favorite...

House

House update time...

Carpet and plumbing are DONE. Yea!!

There are a few small electrical tasks left. The siding (high belly bands and shake in the gables) needs to be completed. Steps and rails from the decks are on the to do list as well. And... everything from the walls and the windows to the sills and ceiling fans needs to be cleaned.

I am madly packing everything we can 'live without' into boxes. There are boxes all over our current living space (which we fondly refer to as 'the storage unit'). We have to move the boxes to get to the other boxes.

We are sooo close. I can hardly wait!

Casualty

As mentioned in a previous post... we have a mama robin and babies nesting in our yard.

Our first casualty was found this week. The babies are getting really big, and one of them was pushed from the nest and died. It was very sad!

We will be watching the nest closely this weekend... they are starting to get impatient for mama to bring them their meals so we might see flying lessons soon. We have been keeping the kids away from the nest area, and they are not to touch the birds if they fall or fly out of the nest. We do have several good areas to watch from, which keeps them happy.

Mow

Stinky mowed the lawn for the first time tonight. He is so excited and proud, and Scott is relieved (since now he won't have to do it every time).

I am proud of him too but deep down it is hard for me to admit that Stinky is actually old enough for that chore!

Animated

Click here to watch a great little flash animation.

Thanks to Digital Media Minute for the link!

Just OK

We (Scott, Stinky, Butthead and I) saw X-Men 3 last night.

It was... just OK. Good special effects and an OK story. It was surprising to see Kelsey Grammar ("Frasier") as one of the X-Men. I thought they didn't make enough of Jean Grey/the Phoenix's arc. Lots of gaps in the storytelling overall.

Earnest

Stinky and I had a great time in Ashland! We saw "The Importance of Being Earnest" which was very funny. Stinky didn't care for the kissing... but there was just a little of that at the end of the play!

On Saturday we attended two unique events, thanks to my Mom who is a "Bowmer Society" member (that means she donates to the educational fund). The first was a workshop. Workshops are usually presented for school groups who travel to Ashland to see the plays. The one we attended was called "The Mask Within and the Mask Without". It was all about both the literal and figurative masks used in theater, literature, and life. There were lots of opportunities to get up and move around and to participate... it was a lot of fun and it was nice to see that he "got it".

The second event was a dinner with some of the members of the company. We were seated with Sara Ruttan, who is playing "Margot" in "The Diary of Anne Frank" this season. Also, the actor who played Jack Worthing/Ernest Moncrieff was in attendance so Stinky got to meet him as well!

We also enjoyed riding bikes, wandering Lithia Park, reading books, eating ice cream, and looking in the shops and Saturday Market around Ashland.

All in all... a very nice mom-n-kid weekend!

Boo-tiful!

Isn't Boo "boo-tiful"? She is definitely the consummate girly-girl!

Why?

Why is the Bend Bulletin's website so freakin' slow? If I insert a quarter, will it go faster? Or is this just there way of sticking it to those of us (and we are many) that don't want to pay for an online subscription?!

For that matter... why do they require a subscription to access their online content? Don't they make enough money from the advertisers?! There are many larger (and arguably better) Oregon newspapers that allow readers to access all online content for no charge.

The Bard

Today's the day!

This afternoon, Stinky and I will make our way to Ashland for the Shakespeare Festival. This is his first trip to the Festival and we are both looking forward to some mom & kid time, and to seeing the play "The Importance of Being Earnest".

Isn't this a great hat?!
