Stew

After the bitter, sub-zero temperatures early this week, now it's warmed up and the weekend has been rather rainy. We don't get a lot of rain in Bend, which is fine with me. I was raised in the Willamette Valley so I am more than familiar with the wet stuff.

Today the rain seems to finally be turning to snow. What started as small, dry white flakes has quickly turned to heavy, cold snow.

It's definitely Stew weather!

I have seen the Crockpot Challenge floating around on a couple other blogs, and Twitter. During the winter we "Crock-It" a couple of nights each week. Seems like a nice way to share ideas and get some new recipes, so I am joining in the fun.

Elise

This post is for Elise... I hope the rest of you enjoy these photos too!

A different kind of Red Hat?

Abyss

The Safeway at 3rd and Franklin had the Abyss today, so if you are still looking that would be a good start. I picked up a few bottles - at $9.50 each this is something that I will save for a special occasion to savor!

As long as I'm on the subject of beer... Scott's first batch was ready for tasting last week. It's a little flat but otherwise very good. Brewing is quite an adventure and a lot of work - but I think he had a good time with it and is looking forward to starting another batch soon.

Don't forget to stop by the library book sale today, anytime before 4pm! The girls and I escaped with a large box of mostly kids' titles for ten bucks.

The Macworld keynote was an interesting experience. Last night, Sis and I weren't sure if we wanted to do the whole "get up early (late?!) and stand in line in the cold" thing or not.

But then this morning at 3:45am it happened.

A garbage truck dropped a Dumpster outside hotel, shaking us awake. The garbage trucks appear to run all night long in the FiDi. But this was way beyond loud. I was instantly wide awake. It was all downhill from there.

So I got up and showered and got ready to go. By the time I was done with the bathroom Sis was about ready too. (She's a night shower-er. I still contend that one of us was switched at birth.) We headed down to the Moscone Center and arrived at about 4:45am.

Nothing, I repeat NOTHING is open at 4:45am. Not the Apple Store. Not Starbucks. Not even Walgreen's.

But there were a LOT of people at the Moscone Center. Yes, standing OUTSIDE in line. We joined the first line we saw - which was the correct one. That's right we were fortunate enough to be in the "Priority" keynote line, since we have Platinum and Super passes. (Thanks, boss!) We were about 50 people back, and thought that looked pretty good... and it was. We were informed that as long as we were last in line it was our job to let others know that this was the priority line and the regular line was around the corner.

I have never seen anyone's eyes go dead and sad, like the look some of those people gave me when I told them they had to go to the other line. Poor them.

Meanwhile we chatted with the other folks in line. Which is to say, I chatted. Sis isn't a morning person. (Come to think of it she isn't really an afternoon or evening person either. Again, I contend that someone was switched at birth.) Since the world is amazingly small, two members of the IT team from the Bend School District were right behind us in line. What are the odds?

Eventually it was time to go inside. Throughout the morning Macworld staffers had walked the line ensuring that we knew what would happen and "when-ish" (their phrase not mine). We were led into the Moscone Center and up the double escalators to the second level (two-by-two, stay in your groups of four!). Then we went down a hall, turned a corner, down another hall, around another corner, and down to the end of ... yeup! another hall. Roughly back to where we started when we got off the escalator. And then we waited again.

Shortly before 9am the VIP's and media were paraded past us, to rub in that they were getting better seats than us.

And then it was our turn.

We scored what I am pretty sure were some of the best non-VIP seats in the auditorium - in the second non-VIP row on the right side of the auditorium. We could see Steve clearly. We could hear Steve clearly. And when Randy Newman was rolled out to sing "You've got a friend in me" (from the movie "Toy Story") he was straight ahead of us so we could see and hear him clearly too.

And in case you haven't heard yet - we sat by Sinbad (the comedian some of us remember from the 80's). He is apparently a Mac Fanboy, and sat directly behind us taking copious notes and sending SMS messages from his, er, Crackberry. I guess Sinbad didn't get the memo about the iPhone. ;)

If you want to read more about the announcements I suggest you watch the presentation here, or read the summary here. Or, just visit the Apple website and look at what's new.

G'nite!

Monday

A good day, for a Monday. But then I am at Macworld so how can it not be good? ;)

I have posted photos on Flickr. Nothing too exciting yet, just some swag and my roomie (who also happens to be my sis). Things should get more exciting tomorrow. I am excited to see what "The Steve" says is "in the air".

Gone...

I am heading to San Francisco for a week. Unfortunately Scott and the kids are staying behind to hold down the fort. I don't know if I will be blogging, but if you are curious to see what I am up to at the Macworld Expo please follow my tweets on Twitter. Especially on Tuesday morning, when I will be trying to keep all y'all up to speed on the keynote!

Cheesy

I have always preferred homemade foods over prepared items, but one of our fallbacks has always been Mac and Cheese. You know, the blue box? And forget Easy Mac, that just doesn't do it for me. And while I enjoy eating "foo foo" Mac and Cheese at places like McMenamins or Bistro Montage, I have never been able to quite nail down a recipe for a homemade variety that everyone likes.

Until now.

And the best part is it's really easy! The recipe is based on a bechamel sauce I found in my Get Saucy cookbook. I played with it to include the added bonus of a good combination of cheeses that results in the right flavor and consistency.

Snow

Just like many other bloggers in Bend, we have a lot of snow in our neighborhood. By the end of the day yesterday (Tuesday) there was about six inches. That's apparently a LOT for the East side of town. So we made the most of it and enjoyed it!

Divot loves the snow. The highlight of our trip to Eugene last month for her was stopping at the top of the pass so that she could run and roll around on it. She loves it when anyone throws snowballs at her. Her favorite thing to do is try to catch them in her mouth and then quickly crunch them into little pieces. She would chase snowballs, big and small, for hours. What a weird dog! Scott started making huge snowballs, and lobbing them high in the air for Divot to catch. Like the one in the photo to the right - which was taken just moments before it smashed onto her nose, and broke into tiny pieces. Still, she wanted moremoremore! Long after we went inside for the night, she sat by the window looking out at the snow.

And yes, of course the kids love the snow too. They bundled up in their snow pants, boots, hats and gloves and headed outside. The roads in our neighborhood are just steep enough to slide down, and they started packing a sledding hill at the park across the street, too. Some other kids from the area were out playing too, and the shrieks and giggles could probably be heard for miles.

Meanwhile Scott and I shoveled. And shoveled some more. And some more. We don't have a long driveway by any stretch of the imagination. But it took the two of us more than an hour to clear it, as well as the sidewalks. Yes, today I am soooore!

It was starting to get dark, but the girls wanted to build a snow man. They did a great job and now we have a "stranded Mt Bachelor skiier" snow man in our yard. Complete with (really old, pointy) skis, poles, and lift pass. How cute is that? My favorite part is the hat.

Happy snow day!

Advice

A friend sent this to me, and I am passing this on to you because it definitely works, and we could all use a little more calmness in our lives.

By following simple advice heard on the Dr. Phil show, you too can find inner peace. Dr. Phil proclaimed, "The way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started and have never finished."

So, I looked around my house to see all the things I started and hadn't finished, and before leaving the house this morning, I finished off a bottle of Merlot, a bottle of White Zinfandel, a bottle of Bailey's Irish Cream, a bottle of Kahlua, a package of Oreos, the remainder of my old Prozac prescription, the rest of the cheesecake, some Doritos and a box of chocolates.

You have no idea how good I feel.

Purge

We (OK... I) decided that one of the "musts" for starting off the new year was purging the kids' rooms. They have accumulated so much stuff, that I don't even know when they use half of it.

Today was day one, and I started off with Boo. We emptied her room into the bonus room - anything and everything but the furniture and her "keepsake" shelves (we wouldn't want to break anything).

Then, slowly but surely we put everything back... where it belongs. You see, a few days ago I hit Target's sale on Rubbermaid and stocked up. So now all the little odds and ends are neatly stored in labeled containers. Phew! It actually didn't take as long as I thought it would - but I was also there to keep her moving instead of playing with every little thing she touched. As a bonus - she also found plenty of stuff to give away! Some of it will be saved for future generations, and some will go either on the Freecycle list or charity. We'll see.

Next up is Q.P.'s room. She has accumulated a LOT more stuff than Boo, but hopefully it won't eat up the rest of the week. Luckily we still have plenty of containers left! Haven't decided when to get her started yet... any volunteers?
