eTrade

I slacked a lot over the weekend. Why?

My back is messed up. It hurts.

I don't know what I did to it. I went to a doctor a couple of weeks ago and started seeing a physical therapist last week. They did some x-rays which came back negative for fractures, ruptures, etc. But in a way it doesn't reassure me because ...

It still hurts.

I dislike pills, but I am learning that they aren't necessarily always a bad thing. Hopefully the fact that I have been on pretty stout pain meds over the last couple weeks explains some of my more... umm... interesting posts? (Like Gezundheit - where did that come from?) The only other thing that seems to help is tape. Scott called me "eTrade" all weekend because the star of tape on my back looks like their logo. Lucky me.

I am due for a work trip to San Jose in a couple of weeks and my PT asked if I was traveling with a Sherpa. So I might have to buy the Troll a couple of drinks in exchange for schlepping my stuff through the airport. (Pretty please?)

So that's my tale of woe. Any thoughts to cure what ails me?

Oh, I've been through back pain something nasty. Mine required surgery, but I've been there, and it sucks.

A few things that worked well for me before my back went totally haywire and there was no helping.

1) Keeping consistent on the advil. It doesn't really help if you just take it when it hurts -- it's more effective if you're steady with it (every 4 hours or whatever).

2) Alternating ice and heat. Don't do exclusivey one or the other -- alternate 20 minutes of each.

3) Gentle stretches: Depending on where it hurts and if it's a muscle knot, you can generally stretch it out sometimes. But you need to be gentle. Don't force anything.

And whatever you do, don't go to a chiropracter -- they'll mess you up good and will bleed you dry financially.
