Day

Mrs. G over at Derfwad Manor asked her readers to share a photo documentary of a day in their life. Here's mine.

Just 9 more minutes, please...
It's always a little too early for me. So I hit this button. Sometimes I repeat this four or five times. (Hint: on Mondays it's usually more.)

Reading up on important stuff
While I laugh at the kids for having to leave for school at a ridiculously early hour, I catch up on email messages and read up on important stuff. Unfortunately for me, soon it will be too cold for them to ride their bikes to school. Which means I will have to drive them. But for now, I stick with laughing at them.

Ahh... nice and hot! Stinky breath, begone!
Time to clean up and get ready for my day. I recommend the toothpaste with the little minty strips. Mmm... winter fresh!

Brace Face! Brace bus!! Brace face!
Halfway to work I get a call from the school because someone is having problems with their braces. So I turn around and we make an emergency trip to the orthodontist's office.

Working Hard
Eventually I get to the office. It's time to get to work!

Teatime! Lunch bunch Gourmet Lunch
But first I need tea. And if it's a good day, then I'll go to lunch with the girls. Or in today's case, I'll just sit at my desk and eat whatever Chef Stouffer is serving up.

A hole driver alert A-hole driver alert. Somewhere on I-84...
Finally it's time to head home. It's rush hour so I have to watch out for a**hole drivers. And I keep my fingers crossed that I won't have to wait for a train at the railroad crossing.

No one puts Divot in a corner Hooping Wheee!!! Rock On
The dog and the kids are so thrilled to see me! They run off to do kid things without me. Or just stand around and make goofy faces.

Ahh ... Asahi! Pumpkin Martini Pinnacle porter Cherry limeade yum! Beer
The RHPB usually gets home later, and we have a drink together. Sometimes it's beer. Sometimes I have a martini. Every once in a while he stops at Sonic and gets a Cherry Limeade for me. And sometimes if it's a bad day then we drink... lots of beer.

Steak dinner Ingredients Slice
Then I am expected delighted to make dinner. Or we order a pizza.

Sunset over the Cascades
The sun goes down. The kids are sent upstairs and we follow to threaten them if they don't go to sleep tuck them into bed. RHPB and I mysteriously turn into couch potatoes.

Book & Bed!!
I crawl in bed, and usually manage to read a few pages before I just can't stay awake another moment. G'night!

Vote

I was just called out by Jack Leblond (@Web_Guy) to make sure I was registered to vote; Yes, Jack, I am. I registered to vote the day I turned 18, and have kept my registration current ever since. One think I have never done? Voted at a "polling place". Since I was an out-of-state student I registered to vote by mail. When I moved back to Oregon, the state started conducting all elections by mail. I have, however, hand-delivered my ballot to the County Clerk's office and picked up my "I Voted" sticker on Election Day. It is, after all, just across the street from my office.

Check out this great video, it’s not only entertaining - it’s informative too. Enjoy!

And since this is a meme, of course I am tagging some folks. This isn't about WHO you are voting for. This is just about voting, period. Are you registered to vote?

102. Rocky Mountain Oysters
103. Red Velvet cupcake (though my personal favorite is Chocolate Orange Chiffon)

Savory Chicken & Tomato Stew

Sometimes I like to just stand in the doorway to my pantry. I have never had a pantry before and I love it. I never want to have a house without an actual ROOM called a pantry ever again. I can see all my ingredients at once. (Well... the ones that don't have to be refrigerated, anyways.) And it's a great place to stash those big appliances (like my KitchenAid stand mixer) that I can't live without but take up too much counter or cabinet space.

And every once in a while I stand in the doorway to the kitchen an ingredient catches my eye, and I get inspired. I hover over the crock pot, adding a little of this and a little of that. Fast forward to that evening, and we have dinner... ready to go after a long work day.

Yesterday was one of those days.

Chicken & Dumplings

Though I love cookbooks and have an extensive collection, many of my favorite recipes originate from something I found on the Internet. Alton Brown has a lot of great, easy-to-follow recipes; inspirational (and mouthwatering) photos and recipes can be found at Smitten Kitchen; and for baking there is nowhere better than Never Bashful With Butter (Oooh You Tasty Little Things). The particular recipe I prepared tonight comes from another local blogger, Deby. I was bummed that I didn't get to meet Deby at the recent blogger meetup and am hoping to see her at the next one (hint, hint)!

Retro NightIt also turned out to be a "retro" night. A few weeks back a friend left their extra Crock Pot here after the Super Bowl. I washed it out but have neglected to return it. Oops! Anyways, my Crock Pot was in the dishwasher when I started dinner. Yes, we use it a couple of times a week, and I usually have to fish it out and wash it by hand. But today the dishwasher was actually running - so I found the visiting Crock Pot and put it to good use. Isn't it great? A word about older Crock Pots - keep a careful eye on the temperature and cooking progress. This particular unit tended to run a little hot, so I would turn it down for a bit every couple of hours to keep the food from sticking and burning. Also these are a booger to clean since you can't remove the crock part! Whoever came up with the idea to make the crockery removable is a genius, I tell you.

ILY

Inspired by Keely (who was inspired by Melissa)... but since we aren't married I am leaving the wedding-related questions blank (just in case someone else wants to play). And no, it's not in the plans. :)
Updated May 4, 2008: Plans changed. We got engaged on Leap Day and decided to tie the knot this weekend. See updates accordingly...

1. Where/how did you meet?
We met at a mutual friends' divorce party. I got there late, and things were already in full swing. A group was playing quarters, so I joined in. Scott is really good at that game. I'm not, so I "won"!

2. How long have you known each other?
Four years.

3. How long after you met did you start dating?
About a month.

4. How long did you date before you were engaged?
Updated May 4, 2008: About four and a half years.

5. How long was your engagement?
Updated May 4, 2008: About six weeks.

6. How long have you been married?
Updated May 4, 2008: Almost 24 hours. :)

7. What is your anniversary?
I consider our "committed as a couple" anniversary to be July 4. That's when we introduced our kids to each other. That's about as committed as you can get!
Updated May 4, 2008: May 3, 2008

8. How many people came to your wedding reception?
Updated May 4, 2008: Twenty, including us. :)

9. What kind of cake did you serve?
Updated May 4, 2008: Strawberry shortcake

10. Where was your wedding?
Updated May 4, 2008: Atelier 6000 in Bend, OR.

11. What did you serve for the meal?
Updated May 4, 2008: Country Style Ribs, Lemon Chicken Kebabs (with zucchini and mushrooms), salad, rolls, Cheesy Potato Casserole, and Asparagus Gruyere Tart.

12. How many people were in your bridal party?
Updated May 4, 2008: The kids each had a "job" but no formal bridal party.

13. Are you still friends with them all?
Updated May 4, 2008: Sure!

14. Did your spouse cry during the ceremony?
Updated May 4, 2008: Almost!

15. Most special moment of your wedding day?
Updated May 4, 2008: When the official read our vows, and everyone burst out laughing.

16. Any funny moments?
Updated May 4, 2008: Stinky laughed so hard that he fell off his stool. Boo's job was to hold my bouquet when Scott and I said our vows, and she got embarrassed. Our friends bebe balanced a rubber ducky on her head.

17. Any big disasters?
Updated May 4, 2008: Nope!

18. Where did you go on your honeymoon?
Updated May 4, 2008: Not yet, still deciding where to go and waiting till the kiddos are out of school for the summer.

19. How long were you gone?
Updated May 4, 2008: Not long enough! :)

20. If you were to do your wedding over, what would you change?
Updated May 4, 2008: That I let Scott's 22 year-old daughter buy me an AMF at my bachelorette party. G'night, Jen!

21. What side of the bed do you sleep on?
The right side. We got ourselves a new (bigger) bed for Christmas, so now we finally have "sides"!

22. What size is your bed?
King size... yeah!

23. Greatest strength as a couple?
Ummm... our enduring devotion to one another? LOL... Actually, we are both really hard working, honest people. I know that's not very exciting, but it's important.

24. Greatest challenge as a couple?
We are the second- and third-most stubborn people I know. (Stinky being the most stubborn.)

25. Who literally pays the bills?
Me.

26. What is your song?
Faith, by Shawn Mullins

27. What did you dance your first dance to?
Scott doesn't dance.
Updated May 4, 2008: Still no dance. :)

28. Describe your wedding dress.
Updated May 4, 2008: An off-white sundress with a brown floral print.

29. What kind of flowers did you have at your wedding?
Updated May 4, 2008: Just my bouquet. I bought flowers at Costco that morning. My sister made me a beautiful hand-tied bouquet from them. There were yellow lilies, purple mums, white alstromeria, eucalyptus, and even a few tulips.

30. Are your wedding bands engraved?
Updated May 4, 2008: We haven't picked them out yet.

And Missy said it better than I could, so here ya go...
It's all in the spirit of ADTILY or Another Day That I Love You Day. Because honestly, shouldn't you show that special someone that you love them everyday?

Honestly

I’ve been tagged by Keeneye to post 7 honest things about myself. Mine probably aren't as deep and meaningful as her revelations, though. Here's the dirt on me...

1. Doh! I used to live in Madras. It was only for a couple of months, and I still regret it.
2. Surprise! I was pregnant with my first kid (Stinky) while on one of those semester study abroad programs. No one knew until after the term ended, everyone went on their Eurail trips, and we met up "one last time" before heading back to the US. That's when my belly grew enough not to be able to hide it anymore. This just about gave my classmates heart attacks.
3. Shhh... I hate keeping secrets and am really bad at it. #2 is an example of the maybe five times I have kept something a secret about something for any length of time.
4. Celebrate! I love birthdays, including mine. I still don't mind getting older. I love me some birthday fussin'.
5. Thumb-sucker! I sucked my thumb until I was 12 years old. No kidding. Then I got braces and it hurt too much, so I stopped.
6. Math geek? I have taken Calculus three times. I still haven't passed. I could differentiate but I couldn't integrate, or something like that. What ever.
7. Crap! I totally forgot to vote today. Arrrrrgh...

I’m tagging Deby at Bryson's of Bend, Occidental Girl, Julie at Chubby Mommy Running Club, Simzgirl, Wendy at There Once Was a Girl, Jen at Under the Ponderosas, and Just a Cuppa Lovers.

Gee, thanks Dave! ;)

Five Things You Don't Know About Me

I have taken up the challenge to complete this meme. I have to list five things about me that I haven't ever revealed in my blog. Here are the rules:
1. Get tagged
2. List five things that have not been revealed on your blog
3. Tag five others.

Here goes...

1. I played violin and viola with my high school orchestra. Poorly.

2. Many years ago I was in a parade at Disneyland. While we were "backstage" waiting for the parade to start I saw Mickey Mouse... without her head on.

3. I am not afraid of heights, but I am afraid to climb. For example, I start to shudder when I step on the second rung of a ladder, but I'm fine once I get to the top!

4. My first job was counting cans and bottles, and cleaning the meat department at Jack's IGA. I lasted five days. I quit because they wanted me to dress up like Mr. Peanut and the costume agitated my claustrophobia.

5. I am a trivia junkie (aka, a "Clavin" after Cliff on Cheers). I once tried out for Jeopardy! and it was the toughest test I have ever taken. When I lived in Salem I was a regular at Mr. Bill's trivia night at Porter's. I miss trivia night.

Book

The rules:

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next four sentences on your blog along with these instructions.

So... I admit it. I like kids' books. And not just "Harry Potter". I like novellas, and other "juvenile fiction". I grew up with Ramona, Fudge, and Harold (and his purple crayon). I dreamed of attending Sweet Valley High or living in a "Little House" with Ma, Pa, Laura and Mary. I especially love picture books. (Ever read, David Gets In Trouble?) That doesn't mean I don't read and enjoy "grown up" books... there is just something comforting about kids' books to me. (And we seem to have an unending supply of them around!)

I picked up Flipped (by Wendelin Van Draanen) at the kids' school book fair. It is a fun, fast read.

That evening my mother announced that the Bakers would be over Friday night at six o'clock; that the menu included poached salmon, crab risotto, and fresh steamed vegetables; and that none of us had better weasel out of being there. My dad muttered that if we were really going to do this, it would be a whole lot better to barbecue because at least that way he'd have something to do, but my mom positively smoked him with her eyes and he dropped it.

So. They were coming.
