Stinky participated in the Solaire Salmon Run today. This was his first 5k race, and he has been training for about a month. He was pretty excited already that the training was helping his mile times at school. (Dropped from 10min to 8min in just a couple of weeks.) His goal was to finish in under 30 minutes and I thought that was pretty ambitious.

But he did it!

Better yet... he enjoyed himself and definitely wants to continue running. He is thinking about joining the cross-country and track teams when he starts middle school in the fall. Yea, Stinky!

Updated... The race results are now online! He was in the top third for the 5k and did very well for his age group. Woot!

A strong start...

Off and running...

Almost there...

Wah-hoo! The end is in sight!!

The finish line...

Woo HOO! That's impressive.

I wish I had taken up running when I was a kid. You can't be a cheerleader at 30, but you can still be a runner.

Great job, Stinkmeister!

Congratulation to Stinky! My daughter who is also going to middle school next year run the 5k also (so did my son in 3rd grade) :-) She did pretty good, 32 min. We would like to find the results online by age group. We saw them in the Bulletin, but not by age group. We tried googleing and found your blog :-) Thanks!

That's awesome! Congrats to him! As somebody who ran competetively and used to coach kids his age, my one piece of advice to him (other than to stick with it, as he'll love it more down the road): Pace yourself. The hardest things for kids to do at this age (or any age, but that's another story for another time) is to pace yourself. 99% of the time, they'll take off like a bat-out-of-hell the first mile, not realizing that he's just wasted all sorts of energy for those other two miles.

But he really should stick with it, as he'll enjoy it for the rest of his life if he does (I still enjoy it, even though I can't do it as much because of my back problem). And the salmon run is such a well-run event (ran the 10K during its first two years of existance).
