Sushi

My friend (and fellow blogger) Shannon is pregnant. Last night Annie and I hosted a shower for her at my house. Since she is having multiple showers we wanted to do something a little different. Not long ago Kate sent me a link about making "candy sushi". Since Shannon has been craving actual sushi, we decided that would be a fun alternative to cake. It was a hit!



Gummi nigiri

These tasty treats are made with Rice Krispie treats, gummi candies, and fruit roll-ups. You can dress them up with just about anything - I used jelly beans, non-pareils, and bento picks.

First off - make your Krispie treat mixture according to the directions on the side of the cereal box. Try not to snitch too much of the mixture before you make the sushi! Don't press it into a pan, instead turn the warm mixture onto a sheet of wax paper. Dampen your hands with water and divide the mixture in half.

How to make rolls: Dampen your hands and shape one of the halves into a rectangle on a new sheet of waxed paper. Arrange gummi worms across the rectangle. Drizzle chocolate over the worms. Roll into log, leaving waxed paper around outside of log. Squeeze the log evenly to compact. Slice the wrapped roll in half with a dampened sharp knife. Carefully remove the waxed paper. Slice into half-inch pieces. Allow to cool completely in a single layer before arranging on a serving dish.

How to make nigiri: Dampen your hands, and grab a hunk of the krispie mixture. Compact the krispie into and oblong ball, then press your thumb into the top to form an indentation. Lay a gummi into the dent. Continue until you have the desired number of pieces (or after you snitch the last of the krispie mixture). Don't forget to dampen your hands frequently to keep the marshmallow from sticking to your hands! Unroll fruit roll-up and cut into quarter-inch strips. Wrap each piece with a strip of fruit roll up and arrange on a serving dish.

I can't say it enough - when you are working with the sticky stuff, keeping your hands damp makes this go MUCH easier. I kept the water on a slow drizzle and wet my hands between each piece of nigiri, and wet the knife every few slices too.

I found your site via I Have to Say, and I have to say that when I saw 'sushi' listed under her cookies/bars theme I was curious... these look very fun! My kids will love them.

Dang, this would be so fun with homemade fortune cookies at the end of an Asian-themed dinner/party. And the kids would love decorating them!!! (Maybe a birthday party or something and the kids could eat with chopsticks and . . .)
