2009

“For an athlete to function properly, he must be intent. There has to be a definite purpose and goal if you are to progress. If you are not intent about what you are doing, you aren't able to resist the temptation to do something else that might be more fun at the moment.” ~John Wooden

In 2009 I accomplished a lot, and lived with as much intention as one can muster.

Possibly my biggest accomplishment? I'm not sure if I'm an athlete yet, but I'm definitely more athletic and healthier than I was at the beginning of 2009. I've continued running (even though I'm still not fond of it), have been going to spin and core conditioning classes lately, and recently started cross-country skiing. The kids got me a set of touring skis for Christmas, so I am looking forward to spending more time on the snow, making my way to the many warming shelters in the area.

Back in April I started logging my various workouts on Daily Mile. I didn't start logging until we had already been running a few weeks, but here are some year-end stats for 2009:

401.76 Total Miles
111.54 Total Time
14 Lbs Burned
146 Total Workouts
0.02 Around World
1,484 TVs Powered
21.15 Gas Saved
265.99 Donuts Burned

Gear usage:
New Balance shoes – 252 mi
Da Tights – 68 mi
Cruiser – 66 mi
Raichle boots – 54 mi
Alpina Touring skis – 12 mi

I didn't just exercise though. In no particular order, in 2009 I...
... had a blast in Sonoma, where I learned absolutely nothing about wine
... planted a garden, almost lost it in a hail storm, and harvested lots of tomatoes and broccoli... but not much else
... escaped the winter cold and spent a week in Kauai
... participated in many 5k runs (Light of Hope, Salmon Run, Pacific Crest, Deschutes Dash, and Turkey Trot)
... hiked to Hanakapiai Falls in Kauai
... attended my first Cyclocross event (and no, I won't be participating in the future... but I'll watch again!)
... ran my first 10k (the Bigfoot) and was on a team for the High Desert Dash
... picked peaches in Kimberly and blueberries in the valley... and made LOTS of jam
... dragged the whole-fam-damily on a road trip through six states
... helped plan Bend's first three Ignite events (the fourth will be in February 2010)
... hiked to the top of South Sister (the third-highest peak in Oregon)
... attended the Sharepoint Conference in Las Vegas and the Open Source Bridge Conference in Portland
... played one measly round of golf, and attended only one measly baseball game
... drank some good beer, and some more good beer - all over the place but my favorites were all at The Little Woody
... joined a book club (specifically, a COOKbook club) and took lots of pictures of the yummy food!
... traveled to Seattle to visit my college roomie
... had multiple photographs I took published in mediums from calendars (Oregon State Parks, December 2010) to Japanese magazines about rock hounding (I know... random huh?)
... discovered that alcohol and running don't necessarily mix a the Bend Beer Run and a Hash Run (but that doesn't mean it'll stop me in the future)
... made tie dye
... in general really enjoyed time with girlfriends. Highlights included red wine & chocolate nights, lunches, coffees, beers, Art Walks, teas, craft night, and multiple viewings of "On A Boat". I love my kids and husband. I enjoy hanging out with guy friends too. But all you girls brought a lot of laughter and smiles to my life this year. THANK YOU!!

It's been a busy year.

For 2010 I only have a couple of goals. I want to participate in the Deschutes Dash Sprint Triathlon... and maybe join a team for the Cascade Lakes Relay (if I can find enough people crazy like me). What do you have planned?
