This post is part of the Monday Missions, hosted by Painted Maypole. All are welcome to write their own posts. This week's Mission is to write a post in the style of a news article.
NaNoWriMo Disappoints
Despite the best intentions, Jen announced that she has withdrawn from NaNoWriMo. Early reviews of the manuscript-in-progress pointed towards a bestseller, rivaling the popularity of the "Harry Potter" series. When asked about her status as a dropout the budding author stated, "who has time for this sort of thing in November of all months?" She is planning to restart the project at a future date. Fans were disappointed, and flocked to the compound where she was holed up for the month offering flowers, chocolate, and cheese.
family stuff, running, recipes, random ramblings and a little of everything else

Menu
Via The Flying Mum... a post in the form of a restaurant menu.
Appetizers
Baby Artichokes - flash steamed and then broiled with herb butter (Oops, not really. They sounded good when I went to the produce stand but I don't know if anyone besides me would have eaten them)
Toasted buttery rounds with soft cheddar (read: Ritz crackers with easy Cheez)
Entrees
Lasagna with meat sauce and three cheeses (Sorry kids, the chef was too lazy to make something with more than 4 ingredients. Maybe tomorrow?)
Elbow pasta with light sauce and zesty chicken (translation: Kraft mac with chicken in BBQ sauce)
Dessert
Anything with chocolate?!
Cocktails
Yes, please!
Sides
It's been a Monday to beat all Monday's. I am beat and ready for a break. I think it's the changing of the seasons, but I have a headache and the brain cells just don't seem to be firing right.
This coming weekend is going to be a weekend for grandparents - Stinky is off to visit his in Seattle and I am going to see my Gramps in Medford. For me it should be a quiet couple of days, with lots of visits to Elmer's and the Red Lobster on the agenda. Maybe I will get some reading done, too!

Show-y
Via The Flying Mum... Congratulations! You are a top executive at a breakout new cable TV company. TV Guide wants to publish a sampling of your new fall lineup. For this post, please provide them with a description of some of the new shows.
Flipper - No, not the dolphin. This is for all you channel surfers who are too darn lazy to flip the channel yourself. Or, if your spouse is a channel surfer then this is a great way for those lonely nights when your sig is away on business. It's like they are there! Flipper shows 5-30 second snippets of commercials, reality TV, sitcoms, infomercials, and Seinfeld reruns.
Name that Crash - Have you ever been sitting in the living room, relaxing while reading a book when an undetermined "crash" sound emanates from another part of your home? Join us while we explore common causes and distinguishing characteristics of household crashes.
It Wasn't Me! - Can you tell which kid did it? Whether it's sticky soda on the kitchen floor or an unflushed toilet, we'll get to the bottom of common household mysteries.
Happy watching!

Via Painted Maypole's Monday Mission... here's my (really lame, really boring) horoscope.
Crabby Cancer-ian Forecast
With more quiet time on your hands, work time (from home and the office) should be more productive and suffer from fewer interruptions. Visitors are on the way... be ready for fun this weekend!

Song
Via Painted Maypole's Monday Mission... here's my song rewrite of The Beatles' "Maxwell's Silver Hammer".
Stinky was ready; he held the Wii-mote steady
Zelda's a cool game.
Riding a horse around on the TV.
Oh, oh, oh, oh.
Balanced on the ball*, defeating monsters big and small,
Excitement starts to mount.
"Watch me beat my highest of high scores,
Mo, aw, aw, om?"
But as he's bouncing u-up and down
His feet slip and he frowns.
Bang! Bang! There goes my new vase**
Down onto the floor.
Bang! Bang! There goes my new vase
That's right, it is no more.
*It's one of those big inflatable stability balls, an almost perfect perch when playing Wii.
**The vase used to sit on the hearth, next to the fireplace. Now it's on the kitchen table in pieces. Scott is gluing it back together.
No children were harmed in the course of this event.

Yapta
Via Jen Pondo's Monday Mission... here's my travel guide entry.
Travel tool for cheapskates
Admit it, traveling is expensive, and you don't mind saving a buck.
Booking airline tickets is tough for cheapskates. Watching airfares go up and down, wondering when is the right time to buy... it's almost like playing the stock market. You want to get the best deal possible, but you don't want the flight to sell out.
That's where Yapta comes in.
There are a lot of "fare watchers" out there, and some work better than others. What I like most about Yapta? It watches fares for purchased itineraries... and if the fare goes down it emails you step by step instructions for getting your money back.
Now - sometimes it's cash, sometimes it's a voucher. But a voucher is still better than watching dollars sprout wings and fly away.
So, when the airfare for an upcoming trip dropped 50 bucks? I got $250 back on our five tickets. How cool is that?

Minutes
Via Jen Pondo's Monday Mission... minutes of the drive back the coast.
Friday, 5/18/2007 1:00pm
Meeting Manager: Jen
Attendees: J.J., Thing 1, Thing 2
Special Guest: Moogy
Meeting purpose: Feed and transport attendees from Camp Magruder (near Garibaldi, OR) to Bend.
Hold-over
Leftover snacks from previous meeting were divvied up among attendees for consumption. Gameboy "DS LITE" devices and cell phones that had been confiscated by the meeting manager at the end of the previous meeting were returned to their owners.
Today's discussion
Attendees had minor conflict regarding size and status of window opening. Meeting manager overrode consensus and allowed window to be open. This was decided in order to address concerns about carsickness expressed by Thing 1.
Attendees took a brief recess. The meeting manager was kept awake by snoring emanating from the back seat.
Scheduled guest appearance was slightly delayed by a train. After the guest arrived the attendees enjoyed a ride on Salem's Riverfront Carousel, running around on the playground, and a short walk around the Riverfront Eco Earth. Meeting manager and special guest enjoyed a short chat while the attendees romped!
The topic of who would be "boss" in Super Monkey Ball session was discussed, with decision that the responsibility would rotate between attendees. This worked out better in theory than in practice.
Brief moment of panic erupted when Thing 2 could not find their money for their Dairy Queen treat. Money was found and all attendees were sufficiently "sugared up".
Attempted negotiations, pleading, and general whining at the meeting manager about music selection failed. (Darnit, if I have to drive, then at least I get to pick the music!)
"Dam" jokes were made in the vicinity of Detroit, OR.
Smelly sleeping bags, articles of clothing, and other belongings of Thing 1 and Thing 2 were unceremoniously dumped onto the sidewalk in front of their elementary school.
Attendees dismissed at 5:30pm.
Action Items
Meeting manager determined that a thorough cleaning of the meeting space is required.
A long sleep-in was ordered for Saturday morning.
Hug own children more often, as they really are well-behaved little buggers.

Forecast
Via Jen Pondo's Monday Mission... my blog post for today is written in the style of a weather forecast. (Yes, it's all caps. Sorry folks... that's just how the weather service seems to operate.)
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
FIVEFOREFUN WEATHER SERVICE BEND OR
123 PM PDT MON MAY 14 2007
.SHORT TERM...HIGH ALLERGY LEVELS BUILDING TODAY. IRRITABILITY LEVEL INCREASING RAPIDLY AS PROVOKED BY CLOUDS (OF COTTONWOOD) AND INCREASED POLLEN LEVELS. DUE TO THIS CONDITION BEWARE OF SUDDEN FLARES IN TEMPERAMENT. HIGH PRESSURE IN HEAD AND SINUSES LIKELY TO REMAIN FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. THERE COULD BE SOME SLEEP CONCERNS WHICH NEED TO BE EVALUATED A LITTLE CLOSER TONIGHT. MODELS INDICATE EMOTIONAL INSTABILITY RELATED TO THIS DISTURBANCE WHICH LEAD TO POSSIBLE STORMS WITH PRECIPITATION OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS. THIS WOULD MAINLY BE AN EARLY MORNING EVENT WITH ANY SIDE EFFECTS ENDING WHEN CAFFEINE AND SUDAFED MOVE INTO THE AREA. WILL EVALUATE THIS SCENARIO AND PROVIDE FUTURE REPORTS IF NEEDED.
.LONG TERM...CHANCE OF ROAD TRIP TO COAST WILL ALLEVIATE SYMPTOMS OF PREVIOUS SYSTEM. PERIODIC BOUTS OF TEMPER WILL BE AGGRAVATED BY PRESENCE OF THREE 12-YEAR-OLD TORNADOES - BUT THESE ARE EXPECTED TO PASS QUICKLY. PERIOD OF RELAXATION AND LONG WALKS ON THE BEACH WILL FOLLOW. THIS TROUGH WILL GIVE WAY TO AN EXPECTED PEAK OF INTENSE ENERGY, EXPENDED MAINLY TOWARDS THE APPLICATION OF ROCK AND MASONRY.

Lamb
Via Andrea's Monday Mission... write a post that is all anecdote: no rumination, no epiphany, no resolution. Hopefully I did this correctly!
Last Easter was the first time I attempted to prepare - and serve my family - leg of lamb. It had been a tradition for my grandmother to prepare this for me as a child when we visited her home. She had passed a way a few months earlier and it seemed a proper homage.
I scoured the Internet for recipes. Most were very simple, so I shopped for the meat and side items, wondering what my family would think of this new dish.
In the end I chickened out, and didn't even tell them what it was. Scott knew of course, but the kids had no idea. Until halfway through the meal J.J. asked, "Can I please have some more of, um, the meat? What is it anyways?"
Four sets of eyes settled on me. I asked, "Does everyone like it?" Four heads nodded.
"It's lamb."
Stinky looked at me curiously, "You mean, like a baby sheep?" I nodded. "Oh! Well it's really good, can I please have some more too?"
Everyone had seconds (and some had thirds). We had lamb for Easter dinner this year too!

Blacksmith
Via Andrea's Monday Mission... this week's challenge is to write a post in the reverse of traditional blog format.
I was full in the best way. The type where a pleasant warmth rises up from your core, but not so stuffed that it hurt to move. The last few bites of chocolate and freshly-made Bailey's flavored ice cream hit the spot but I was very glad that the other goodies on our dessert plate - cookies and some peanut brittle - could be boxed up and enjoyed at home... much, much later.
It was one of those truly great dinners, I had decided. When a server brought the food to the table she asked, "You really don't know what you are getting? That is so cool!" The risk was worth it. The trout dish selected by the chef was done very well, and was something I wouldn't order for myself. It was accompanied by a delicious rice dish. The beurre blanc sauce was slightly sweet and light, enhancing the flavor of the fish well. Scott's pork chop and mac & cheese tasted as good as it looked too. With a second apple-pear martini at hand I dove into the dish and savored every bite.
When the second "surprise nibble" appeared I was impressed again. We were served a black-pepper pasta made into a ravioli, filled with a marscapone cheese mixture, served with capers and sun-dried tomatoes. Delicious and tantalizing - I wanted more. I had been considering the pasta dish from the menu but now was undecided. I made a big decision - and asked our server to find out what the chef recommended. They were more than happy to oblige.
Shortly after my first apple-pear martini and Scott's beer were served our waiter reappeared with a surprise. The chef had prepared a special amuse-bouche for us - a seared diver scallop served over an asian slaw with mandarin oranges. The sauce was slightly sweet and the scallop was creamy. Yummm... if everything was going to be as good as this starter then dinner would very good!
The timing couldn't have been better. After a somewhat stressful first few days of the week we decided that it was finally time to use the gift card for the Blacksmith Restaurant that was given to Scott. We had originally planned to go on Wednesday night but found out that a friend recently started there, and would be cooking on Thursday. He strongly recommended that we change our plans and come in on Thursday. So we did!

Notes
Via Andrea's Monday Mission...
What's new in version 3.07?
Downloads not available to the general public. Please contact the Home project coordinator to obtain access to the most current version. Note, all slots for the current version are sold out. New participants are not currently being sought.
Compatibility concerns
Continuing to experience intermittent compatibility issues between J.J. 12.3 (formerly known as the Butthead module), Stinky 11.6, and Boo 8.2. Resolution expected to take approximately 10 years (on or about when they mature from modules to independent application status).
Introduction of Patches 1.1 has been causing minor disruption to the functionality and dependability of Divot 0.5.
The aforementioned compatibility concerns have contributed to the developments of Migraine 36.5, Beer 24.7, and Sighing 4.20 in order to keep legacy modules (Scott and Jen, version numbers unknown) from crashing.
New features
Patches
Although unnecessary, the Patches module has been a positive introduction and we are proud to announce that this feature has been fully integrated. Main functions include sleeping, purring, eating and cuddling. Patches has assumed control of Sofa 2.1 and Windowsill 5.2.
Chores
Chores module been restructured and implemented in such a way to streamline the functionality and interaction between the J.J., Stinky, and Boo modules. As far as we can tell so far the introduction of the Chores module does not have a negative impact on the Homework feature and no Dishes options have experienced a crash so far.
Flex
This feature has contributed to the Jen module's interest and curiosity in Work 5.8.
Yard
Overlooked during the TooDarnColdSeason 7.2 updates, Yard 2.1 is finally getting the attention it deserves in this release. In this version you can expect to see Flowers 3.2 and Footpaths 2.1. Planned updates also include Shrubs 7.2, Roses 3.1, and MiscPlantings 12.3.
MBP
Primarily implemented to enhance the productivity of the Jen module.
Enhancements and bugfixes
Performance inhibitors have been removed with the addition of the Chores module and the Allowance feature.
Services no longer supported
Whining 3.2, Arguing 7.3, and DirtyLooks 1.3 have been deprecated. Any modules displaying these behaviors will need be taken offline and rebooted immediately to avoid further systems interruption.

Via Andrea's Monday Mission... a slice of life written in the form of a press release. Yah, I know it's pretty pathetic. I am not too inspired today.
Toast Identity Revealed
Bend, OR -- March 11, 2007
The Fiveforefun household was recently stricken with a confusion over the classifications of different types of toast.
Recently one of the shorter members of the household asked if they could make "French Toast". Upon further discussion, and description of the toast-making process it was determined that the short person did not want to make "French Toast" but actually wanted to make "Buttered Toast".
Our findings:
French toast is sliced bread battered with an egg mixture and grilled until lightly browned on both sides. It is topped with butter, powdered sugar, maple syrup (an elvish favorite), and sometimes berries. French toast is delicious.
Buttered toast (sometimes known as just "toast") is sliced bread inserted into a machine called a "toaster". When activated, the machine burns the bread, making it barely edible. The burnt bread is then slathered in butter and sometimes jam or honey. Toast is rarely delicious and usually only eaten when the taller members of the household shirk their grocery shopping duties and there are no other snacks available.
An important distinction is that "toast" is not served with maple syrup. But maybe it should be.

Jacket
Via Andrea's Monday Mission... my life written in the form of a book jacket. One you really don't want more details about!
Are you mystified by your pre-teen daughter's mood swings? Is she crying at the drop of a pin, casting withering looks your direction with increasing frequency, and talking on the phone more than she talks to you?
