Cyclocross

If you are anywhere near Bend, Oregon this weekend, I hope you have checked out at least one of the events happening in conjunction with the Cyclocross National Championships... if not one of the races!

We went to the "Crossculture" gallery walk downtown last night. It was amazing to see a great blend of locals and athletes mingling and enjoying what the town had to offer.

This afternoon we caught the Mens' Masters race. A friend's husband was racing, so that helped guide our decision for when to go. It was a GORGEOUS day to watch the race!! I was bundled in layers but didn't feel like that kid from "A Christmas Story". There were a lot of people out there, but not so many that we weren't able to stake out a good spot, but then move on to watch at different parts of the course.

And of course, we were sure to check out the Deschutes Brewery tent too!

Ignite!

Some of you have heard me talk about Ignite, or seen some chatter about this on Twitter. I attended Ignite Portland 3 last year and it was a blast.

I'm proud and excited to announce... Ignite Bend 1! Getting to this point has taken a lot of work and energy from some very talented local folks. I am so excited that this is finally happening...
Burning ideas are spreading across Central Oregon as the region prepares to host its' first “Ignite” event on Thursday, February 12th at 7:30 pm. Speakers are preselected and proposals are still being accepted on the website – ignitebend.com. If your topic is chosen you get five minutes on stage to share your idea. But here’s the catch – you only get 20 slides and they rotate automatically after 15 seconds. Organizers are also looking for sponsors to help cover event costs, and volunteers to make sure the night goes smoothly.

Come join us for an incredible community event!

Where: The PoetHouse Art in the TBD Loft - entrance through The Wine Shop at 924 NW Brooks #100., Bend, Oregon

Day: February 12th, 2009

Time: 7:30pm to 10pm

Tickets: Admission is free but space is limited. Guarantee yourself a spot in the audience by reserving your ticket at http://ignitebend.eventbrite.com/.

This should be a really fun night, and I am excited to see what types of talks are submitted. Hope to see everyone there!

Boot

Like many others in my circle of friends (both local and "virtual") I have been making an effort to get into better shape. Let's face it - I don't have the most active job. This summer I started walking on a somewhat regular basis with a group of friends. Now that it's cold and dark in the morning, it's getting harder and harder to be motivated to roll out of bed early for a walk.

In the meantime I also started hooping which is pretty fun. It's a great cardio workout and seems to be helping with my balance and coordination. Plus I can't help but smile like an idiot while hooping. It's fun! I think that's part of what brings me back to class, week after week.

I've also noticed signs and announcements - as well as overheard people raving about - Boot Camp style exercise programs. It's a group fitness class that generally meets outdoors and combines several exercise styles including stretching, cardio, abs work, calisthenics, yoga... a little of everything. Several people have told me I should give it a try but it was tough to fit in. Not to mention, it's a little on the spendy side to just "give a try".

So when I saw a note on Hack Bend that there was a Boot Camp offering a free class this weekend, I figured this was my chance. Of course I had to send a shout out to my Chubby Mommy buddies to see who was interested. And I was delighted when my friend Kate sounded interested.

Let me digress for a moment. Kate is my best "wild hare" friend. If I see something that looks interesting, she always seems game to try. She has fun ideas of her own too! We've been to some great events, like Ignite Portland. And we've laughed our way through some, er... interesting?... events like the Taste of Home cooking show. Thanks, Kate!

So this morning as I was milling around, we decided (via very official text messages) that we would give Better Body Boot Camp a try. I know how that name sounds... but hey at least it's honest! I have kids, so I'm not necessarily looking for more Adventure in my life. But who doesn't want a Better Body? There's always something needing improvement, right? It's just that in my case there's a lot that needs improvement.

Arriving at Drake Park, I saw a small group assembled down at the stage. The instructors looked awfully perky for so early in the morning on a VERY COLD Saturday. Whatever they had, they weren't sharing. Soon they had us stretching and I was quickly warm enough that I could shed my winter coat. Hat and gloves stayed on for most of the class though!

Let me tell you... Boot Camp class is HARD.

And the hour long session does NOT fly by.

I kept thinking, "Julie would tell me this is one of those Try, Not Cry moments."

The hardest part? Hearing "hey you're almost there!" and then doing what felt like a million more reps of whatever brutal activity we were practicing. Some were harder than others. Others were even fairly easy in comparison. But even those were more difficult the second (or third, or fourth) time around.

Yikes.

Even though it was really hard, there was some fun along with the suffering. In my heart I feel good about doing something nice for my body. I don't know if my muscles and joints agree yet. Maybe my body would have been more thankful if I had come home and treated it to a nice long soak in a hot tub. But since we don't have a hot tub, I don't think my muscles were getting their hopes up.

After class we toasted our survival and warmed up with a large pot of tea at Townshend's. I was so happy to have something hot to drink!! And the shower that I finally took (after coming home and going straight to spreading bark and otherwise "winterizing" the yard - before it snows again) was probably the best shower. Ever.

Am I cut out for Boot Camp? I'm not sure. Maybe I should decide depending on how sore I feel tomorrow? As I told Kate over tea, I think I would definitely enjoy something more in line with Flip-Flop Camp.

Let me know if you see a poster for Flip-Flop Camp. I'd love to give it a try.

Rude

Last night we went to the Jonny Lang concert at the Athletic Club of Bend. Our next door neighbor buddies came with us and offered to drive. So we got there in style - riding in their red convertible Slug Bug. It was a great night for a short ride with the top down. When we got there my hair was a little worse off but hey, when isn't it?

We arrived about 45 minutes early but it was already getting crowded. The last time we went to a show there we sat up on the little hill, against the building. Scott remembered that the acoustics up there are horrible so instead we opted for a nice spot right next to the reserved seats. We spread out our blankets and set up our (required) low-back chairs. Off we went again, in search of beer and food.

We didn't have to wander far - there was a beer wagon next to the stage. Once everyone had a cold Deschutes brew in hand we wandered a little further and found the food booth. The options were good and we were happy. Scott had a cheeseburger and it came with plenty of toppings - fresh lettuce, tomato, onion. We girls each ordered a chicken caesar salad - tasty with plentiful chicken and not "over dressed". Our other friend had a pesto pasta and he seemed happy too.

Before the opening act started I was sure to make a run to powder my nose. The restrooms are located in the Athletic Club locker room. I am not sure how it would feel if I was a Club member, to have all these random concert-goers tramping in and out of the locker room after my workout. But, I guess that comes with the territory. They must have been informed there was a concert that night, right? Anyways I am guessing it must have been stressing at least one person out because the restroom had that unmistakable smell. You know what I mean, right? Those - er - herbal supplements? I guess that's one way to relax after getting some exercise.

The opening act was a local musician named Reed Thomas Lawrence, and he was excellent. He is going to be making some other local appearances soon and I highly recommend checking out his set before he goes on the road. We liked the music so much that Scott went over to his booth and bought one of his CD's during intermission. Very good stuff!

After some announcements, Jonny Lang was welcomed to the stage. And this was when the night really started to go downhill for us. A woman not far away from us took a picture of Jonny on stage, and a security guard came over and harassed her about it. Now, I know there are lots of bands that don't want fans to take pictures at shows for one reason or another. But it is usually made clear at those venues that cameras are not allowed. As far as I could tell there weren't any signs proclaiming "no pictures please". On the other hand there were lots of signs reminding us "low back chairs only" and "no outside food or drink". Is it an unwritten rule now that you are not supposed to take pictures at concerts? If so that is a surprise to me. Recently we went to the KT Tunstall show at the Tower Theater and I took several pictures. The ushers at that show saw my camera and even asked to see the photos. In the interest of courtesy to other patrons I turned the flash off. Since we were outside this time I don't think her flash popped so I don't know what the issue was.

After the security guard walked away five or six people walked up and stood there. Right in front of us. Completely blocking our view of the stage. They weren't dancing or anything. Just. Standing. There. From where I was sitting, it didn't appear that their view of the show would have been any worse if they had sat down. And if they had sat down, then they wouldn't have been blocking the view of the stage for our group, and roughly 50 other people. In case you don't know, the ground at the Athletic Club is quite flat except at the very back, where the acoustics become poor as I mentioned earlier.

So, at this point here is a picture of our view of the stage. Nice, eh? I guess... if you are really into looking at people's butts, not the show. Being the shy guy that he is (ha!) Scott walked up after the song and said something like "Hey man, do you realize that some of us back there are having trouble seeing? We would all really appreciate it if you would take a seat so that all of us can enjoy the show." One guy laughed at him and turned around and waved at all of us that he was blocking. Everyone else just ignored him. Scott came back to our seats, muttering about how disrespectful people can be. Everyone around us thanked him for trying. So we were obviously not the only ones who were irritated by the "standers".

Meanwhile a few couples also came to the front and were dancing to the next song. I have to say, I like watching the dancers. They are clearly having fun and give me something to look at other than their butt. Some of them were better dancers than others, but it was still neat to see them enjoying the show in that way.

By about the fourth song I needed to stretch my legs and wanted an ice cream. I figured I couldn't see anyways, but could hear the music. As I was walking over to the food area I saw the same security guard that had harassed the lady with the camera. Here's a recap of our conversation:
Jen: Why, at a concert that requires low-profile chairs, are people are allowed to stand in front of the seating area?
Security Guard: I don't think they are really supposed to do that.
J: Well, there are a bunch of people standing in front of us, and it is really bothering my group and all the people sitting near us. Can you ask them to move?
SG: I don't have time to run around telling people to move. They would just move back. It's not my job to tell them to move.
J: Oh? OK then, what is your job?
SG: My job is to make sure people are having fun at the concert.
J: Interesting. Do you realize that there are about 50 people over there that are not having fun, because they can't see the show?
SG: Like I said, there's nothing I can do. I don't make the rules, the promoter does.
J: I don't understand, you said they weren't supposed to be standing. Is there someone different I should talk to?
SG: There's no one here that is gonna help a sarcastic bitch like you. I am walking away. I am done talking to you.

I stood there in shock - confused and upset. I asked for help, ended up on the receiving end of a bunch of double talk and then just was called a foul name by an employee at the concert. I couldn't help it - tears came to my eyes. I looked over and the security guard was standing a few feet away, watching the show. Not paying attention to the patrons to "make sure everyone has fun". No, he apparently couldn't be bothered to actually do his job, and I was preventing him from enjoying the show.

An Athletic Club staff person was at the ice cream booth and he noticed that I looked upset. He asked what was up and I told him about my frustration over our blocked view and my conversation with the security guard. He looked shocked, but admitted there wasn't anything he could do since he worked for the Athletic Club and security worked for the concert promoter. He did say that he was very sorry, and offered to give me my ice cream for free. I told him that wasn't necessary but I appreciated the offer.

When I got back to our seats, Scott and our friends were ready to go. Everyone else in our area was packing up and leaving too. We gathered our things and headed back to the Slug Bug. While we were walking through the parking lot I heard another couple say that they wouldn't bother going to concerts at the Athletic Club any more - they could hear them just fine from their house and the view was better. We laughed and agreed that it would be much more pleasant to look at our yard than a bunch of butts.

Overall? The main event of our night was an epic FAIL. I can't believe how we were treated by other concert-goers, and I am disgusted that an employee of C3 called me that name. Looking back I am somewhat happy with the rest of the evening since we got to hang out with our neighbor friends, go for a ride in the Slug Bug, and really enjoyed the opening act. But the next time I have an opportunity to attend a concert at the Athletic Club, I will probably pass.

Hoopy

It's not a really big secret that I am not a big fan of exercise.

This is not to say, I am not active. I enjoy getting outside for a nice long hike or a walk with friends. I like golfing and swimming too. What I find difficult is exercise programs.

Lately I have felt like I could stand to "firm up", if not drop a few pounds. So I have been walking several days a week with a group of friends. But I also wanted to add something a little more aerobic to my routine. You know, something to get my heart pumping and maybe help with some "core strength" while I was at it. But my knees just can't take step class, I find lap swimming to be monotonous, I'm not flexible enough for yoga, and I just don't like lifting weights. What to do?

Then I heard about hoop dancing. I found a class here in Bend and convinced Kate to come with me. I thought, hula hooping is something I can do! But I wondered what we would do during the 90-minute class.

We did a LOT! There was a fair amount of stretching and keeping loose. Of course, we spent most of the class keeping the hoop moving 'round as well. Then the teacher emphasized this was a hoop dance class. We were encouraged to move about, freestyle, as we became comfortable and it felt right. It was work to keep the hoop going, but as we went she also taught us some fun moves.

Like moving the hoop around your waist, as is "normal". Then spinning it up over your head with one hand. And spinning it back down to your waist with another.

Without letting the hoop stop spinning.

It was difficult. But very enjoyable! By the end of class I could keep that hoop going throughout the move. It didn't look quite as smooth and natural as when the teacher did it, but I felt like I made progress. Maybe someday I will be good enough to show the world. But for now I think I'll keep it in the studio.

Class was so much fun!! The music was fun and upbeat, and everyone seemed to be having fun. I think I had a goofy smile on my face pretty much the whole time. Yes, it would have been embarrassing to let people watch, but that was the beauty of this class. No one is really watching you because everyone else is concentrating on learning the moves at the same time! Also since we were all pretty much new to the hooping scene, the hoops banged to the floor fairly frequently so no one felt like they were any better or worse than anyone else.

I'm hooked on hooping. My next class is on Monday night. I am looking forward to learning the next fun move!

Want to give it a try? If you are in Bend check out Hoop Dazzle. Hope to see you there!

Balloonatic

Kent Couch is going to try again!

This morning I received the following note:
Okay so we need a little buzz... This is really exciting! Kent Couch is taking off Saturday [July 5th] at 6:00 from the Stop and Go Mini-Mart on 27th and 20. We will hopefully be posting a few post from the chase crew thanks to the folks at the wireless source.
So, if you have ever been interested in seeing our local cluster balloonist in action go down to the Stop & Go tomorrow morning. Last July he made it all the way to La Grande, though his chair was only found and returned last month. This time around he has a full featured website, including interactive trip tracking. I wonder how far he will fly?

Good luck, Kent!

Meant

I've meant to blog about several things lately, but I haven't. If I had found the time to post you might have enjoyed reading about...

...My trip to Ignite Portland 3. Kate and I had a fun time. Afterwards we went to dessert at Rimsky's with Ana's mommy and daddy. But hey, at least you can look at my photos from the event.

...Eating dinner at the new Flatbread Community Oven in the Old Mill District. While the gelato was worth going back for, the pizza was a little "meh!" Oh well...

...Boo's ballet recital. The one that lasted three hours, in a non-air conditioned auditorium. That also featured tap dancers. Which proves that I love Boo. A LOT!

...Hiking the McKenzie Trail to Tamolitch Pool. With Divot and a friend. To see a waterfall that happens once in a lifetime. It was worth the drive.

...Eating Chicken & Waffles in Downtown Bend. But they were a little too classy for my taste. I bet I know who can do better. (And I'll let you know as soon I hear whether they give it a twirl!)

...Going to a Bend Elks baseball game with Occidental Girl and her family. RHPB bought OC a sno-cone which quite possibly made him a new best friend, but might also have made her head spin around from the sugar rush. Oops!

...Our family trip to da beach. It was windy but still fun. We hiked, played in the sand, and found geocaches. Oh yeah, and I got older while we were there too.

...How sore I was after walking (at 6:30 in the morning) with Chubby Mommy and Speedy Kate.

Sorry folks, I meant to do better. Where the heck is this summer going, and would someone please hit the pause button?!

Picnic!

From my good friend Chubby Mommy, for all of us geek girls in Central Oregon...
Cupcakes!Cupcakes in the Park
Many of us are liking Le Cakery on Galveston, but they don’t have anywhere to sit. How about we get some cupcakes and meet everyone at nearby Harmon Park? Not where the baseball fields are, but just a bit beyond the fields, near the footbridge by the river. There’s a lovely grassy area and picnic tables. We could brown bag it and either get a cupcake before you come, or order them from me and I’ll pick them up. They are $2.50 a cupcake, and if you don’t want to pick up your own, tell me your best kinds and I’ll try to get close, or we can pre order.

Whaddya think? Maybe around 12:00 noon?
What: WoTech Cupcakes in the Park
Where: Harmon Park (picnic area near the footbridge)
When: Thursday, June 19 at noon
Why: Because everyone likes picnics and cupcakes (right?!)

Hope to see you there!

Vacation

School's Out! I don't know about you but two of my least favorite words are "I'm Bored!" Lately I have been looking around to see what types of free activities are out there for the rug rats... and it turns out there is a lot going on for the kids in Bend this summer. So in addition to what I am sure will be weekly (daily?!) trips to the pool I made a list of all of the different activities that they can try... and since I am super-nice I also put them on a calendar of free summer activities (including the scheduled events at the library that are part of the FREE Summer Reading Program) for all of you to take advantage of, as well!

Standard disclaimers apply! Please verify all activities and hours before attending to be sure something isn't canceled or rescheduled at the last minute. Since my kids live in Bend, this calendar is pretty much just about Bend! (But maybe Occidental Girl will setup a Redmond calendar that I can link to?) If there is something you know about that is missing, leave a comment and let me know and when I get around to it I will add it. :-) And... ENJOY!

Happy summer, everyone!

Balloons

This morning I woke up early - though not as early as I would have liked. When I walked out my front door at 6:15am after rushing to dress and grab my gear...

The sky was filled with balloons! Like this one...
Balloon and Mountains

And this one...
Balloon top

I hopped in the car and instead of heading to Jewell (where the balloons were lifting off) I drove and parked a short distance away, off 15th Street just east of the school. I had a good view of the ones still lifting off and others that were already drifting over Bend.

Since the balloons were headed North, I started driving that general direction, ultimately arriving at Mountain View High School. Along the way I made some stops. At Hal Puddy park, one balloon hovered over the soccer/lacrosse field. Some more good photo op's came at the Hertz Car place on Hwy 20, where "Skyscraper" landed. I passed the Re/Max balloon, which had landed on the sidewalk of NE Savannah near Pilot Butte. After I arrived three balloons landed at the high school ("WWJD", "Independence", and "Rise and Shine"). I arrived right as two balloons landed and watched as the crews got to work stabilizing them and then packing up. It's fascinating to watch that huge balloon get packed into that teeny little bag!

And after all that activity (check out the photos) I was still home by 8:30am... plenty of time to shower and change before meeting a friend for breakfast at Jake's. (Yumm... marionberry french toast!)

Tonight is the Night Glow at the Old Mill District. I'll be the one with a camera in one hand and a (martini? glass of wine? beer?) in the other. Hope to see you there!

Paper

Since it's almost my birthday AND my name changed, I went to the DMV today to renew and update my license. They gave me this:

Yeup... it's a paper card. With a black & white photo and the word "INTERIM" stamped across it in huge letters. I also had to surrender my current/expiring plastic "permanent" license. The nice DMV lady warned me that only a friendly OREGON police officer will accept this flimsy paper card as ID. No one else is required to accept this as a legitimate form of identification. So if I am planning to fly, rent a car, purchase alcohol or cigarettes, or go to an R-rated movie I am SOL. Well, not completely, I have a passport so I can fly or rent a car. But no alcohol, cigarettes, out-of-state traffic stops, or "grownup" movies for me for the next couple weeks!

I wonder what will happen if I need to write a check, go to Costco, or am otherwise asked to provide ID? This should be an interesting little experience to see what I can and can't get away with. And Scott will have to buy his own Coors Light for now, since I still get carded! (Yes, now I am just bragging.) I wonder if I can convince him to pick up some groceries while he is out buying beer? (Kidding...) It's a good thing that there isn't a minimum cupcake age, or there would be some big trouble!

Here's some more information about Oregon's new "central issuance" and answers to some questions about temporary paper driver licenses. For example, What happens if my dog eats it? and What if it is confiscated by law enforcement?

p.s. The lovely art in the background is by Miss Boo. She was nice enough to hang out with me on Election night and decorated my office white board for me. Kind of reminds me of when I used to go into my mom's office to visit/irritate her and drew on her chalkboard... I was right about the same age too!

Green

Typical Memorial Day weekend weather - raining off and on, with a thunderstorm tossed in for good measure!

On the other hand my yard is loving that extra water and a break from the intense heat! We're gearing up for a gorgeous summer. Any guesses when it will be here?

Bungalow

I really, really wanted to like the Bungalow. I'd seen the "coming soon" sign for months (which begs me to question, how long is "soon"?) when shopping at the Cascade Village Mall. The tropical theme looked appealing - similar to Rainforest Cafe but a little more low key and upscale.

The ambiance is right on. When you step inside you are surrounded by tropical flowers, etched glass, waterfalls, and fish tanks. Tables are cozy and the "bungalow booths" (raised, deep booths with curtains) are great touches. The dining patio overlooks a busy pedestrian area that has a fountain and little traffic. Bright red umbrellas and large heaters keep diners happy in any type of weather, and the large sofa area with a fire pit looks like a great place to lounge on a warm summer night.

When we arrived it took a few minutes to seat us. I didn't mind waiting but I did mind being ignored. The gal at the "welcome cabana" didn't ever look up at us (or the guy in line in front of us). I don't care if it's not your job to seat us... you could at least look up and say "hi"!

We were seated on the patio and then we waited some more. Luckily water was delivered quickly - it was a warm evening. We perused the food menu and the wine list but there was no drink menu. My friends and I wondered about the specialty drinks but didn't see anything at any of the surrounding tables. Finally a bus boy arrived to refill our water glasses, and deliver bread so we asked him if there was a specialty drink menu. He looked confused and had to go get a waiter. This one said our waiter would be with us shortly, but he would at least get us a drink menu. He came back with one (for the four of us to share). We made our decisions... and waited again. Finally the original waiter (not ours) returned making excuses for "our" waiter and said he would be serving us tonight. We placed our drink orders, asked questions about the food and specials, and placed our food order at the same time.

A word about the menu. Bungalow is "one of those places". You know, the type of place that does not include salad as part of the meal. Yes, you can order one separately but it will cost you. So keep that in mind when you look at the AMAZING list of side dishes (generally one or two are included with your entree). The appetizer list looked very appealing but we passed. No one ordered salad either. The entrees are varied and there seems to be something for everyone. If you are feeling adventurous they offer Wild Boar chops in addition to steaks and a variety of seafood dishes. Paella sounded good but with the warm weather something lighter, like fish, was what I had in mind. I ordered Marlin and my friends all chose Ahi (though two different preparations). For sides our tastes varied - I stuck with vegies and selected grilled asparagus and corn on the cob with "chili lime butter". Other selections at our table included vegies with pan-fried noodles, wasabi mashed potatoes, and jasmine rice. No one ordered exactly the same thing!

Finally our drinks arrived... but one by one with a few minutes in between each. This was puzzling to us as the restaurant wasn't all that crowded. I took a sip of my mojito (supposedly a house specialty) and grimaced. I really don't think there was any rum in it, and without rum a mojito is a sprite with lime and muddled mint. Blech! My friend that also had a mojito told me hers was similarly weak. When the waiter returned to ask things were we explained our problem. To his credit, the drinks were whisked away and quickly replaced with new mojitos that had PLENTY of rum in them. Delicious!

Minutes after we received our replacement drinks, dinner arrived. The Marlin was firm and sweet and had a nice sauce with it that was very good. The asparagus tasted fresh and slightly crisp. The corn was crunchy and sweet with lots of butter. I expected a "kick" from the chili but tasted no heat - there was definitely a hint of lime though. My friends were all happy with their selections as well.

Since our drinks arrived shortly before our food we decided against a second round, and we were all too full for dessert. So... keeping in mind that we each had an entree and one beverage... AND that we were sitting at a restaurant at A MALL... I think everyone at our table had a bit of sticker shock and agreed it was overpriced.

In summary - the food and ambiance are excellent. But this place has some SERIOUS service, organization, price point, and bar issues to work out if they are going to be successful.

Pansies

Yesterday afternoon I noticed that some very brave pansies made it through our long, snowy winter and have started to bloom! Pansies are my mom's favorite flowers and whenever I see them I think of her so it was nice timing for them to make an appearance since it's Mother's Day weekend.

Today we spent a few hours doing some spring cleanup in the yard. The kids helped me pull weeds and I cleared some of the dead stuff away. Scott even fired up the lawnmower. There is a LOT of bunch grass in our flower beds and it's a real workout to clear that junk. While pulling I found even more pansies coming back... hooray! It looks like even though the tulips and daffodils put up some nice foliage that they aren't going to bloom well; there are only a few buds and they are very small, it was just too cold I guess! There are a lot of other perennials coming back from last year, including monarda, poppy and goblin flowers. Spirea is starting to bud, lilacs are growing like crazy, and the rhododendron looks good. Not doing so well is an azalea and there's no sign of the lupines coming back. Oh well!

My excuse for not finishing? It started snowing. We scurried to put things away and hustled inside to get warm. It didn't last long, but by then I had washed "outside" off and changed clothes... so there is work to do some other day. I can hardly wait to get some annuals planted, and get some more color in our flower beds!

Barack

While the "town hall meeting" was great, I will leave the political commentary to those who are better suited to writing about those topics. It's definitely not me - when I asked my kids if they knew anything about Barack Obama they thought he was a singer or a basketball player. Oops!

My favorite quote? Actually, from the child in front of me who during the National Anthem asked, "Is this his theme song?"

My least favorite moment? When taking questions from the audience someone actually asked after everything that happened with Michigan why not "just give Florida to Hillary". WTF?! With time for only a few questions why do people think this type of thing is funny or cool? Message to the idiot woman that did this: Thanks a lot for wasting everyone's time and making Bend look stupid. Because that's all you accomplished.

I did enjoy listening to Senator Obama's speech and his responses to the other, more intelligent, questions. But most of all I enjoyed the crowd. Overall it was a great group and everyone left excited and energized.

Take me to PROM!

marrrrteeeeeneeee...

I have to be brutally honest right now, and share that I don't care for gin. At. All. My grandmother used to drink gin martinis and once she let me try a sip. It made up my mind that martinis are nasty, undrinkable concoctions.

And then one day I tried my first vodka martini. And then a lemon drop. And the downhill spiral continued. I like me some martinis now, often the "foofier" the better. Bend happens to have not one but two dedicated martini bars, and if I won the lottery I might buy my own stool in one of them. Or both.

Other establishments in town are cultivating a nice selection of martinis as well. My favorite restaurant, Zydeco, has a delightful Blueberry Lemon Drop. But now The Blacksmith appears to be taking things to the next level with a series of martini events. We had a wonderful meal there last year, so I am sure they will do a great job!

Thanks to Harold at ad HOC words + ideas for letting me know about this. Hmm... I wonder if they offer scholarships?

Great Gatsby! During May, the Blacksmith Restaurant + Bar + Lounge mixes up its Wednesday tastings with the swankiest of cocktails, the martini. Join the Blacksmith’s own intoxicologist, John Hansen in the Anvil Room this week for “Martinis of the ’20s,” a journey through the martini’s history, including John's antique shaker collection.

Here’s the line-up for May:
May 7: Martinis of the ’20s
May 14: Post-Prohibition Martinis
May 21: Disco Martinis
May 28: Modern Martinis

Martini tasters will be served cocktail party-style, with appetizers included. Price is $25 per person. Party starts at 5pm.

The Blacksmith Restaurant is nationally known for Chef Gavin McMichael's New Ranch Cuisine. A recent renovation includes a new lounge and full bar, designed in backlit alabaster. The Blacksmith is located in downtown Bend in the historic Pearson Blacksmith Building, 211 NW Greenwood Avenue. For reservations and info, visit http://www.bendblacksmith.com or call 541-318-0588.

Tonight

It's Wednesday night, a "school night". You want to hang out with some cool people but you aren't sure where to go. Why not head down to the...

Central Oregon Blogger Meet-up
Wednesday, April 30, 5:30ish at the Summit, Downtown Bend
To RSVP visit this event's page on Upcoming and click "I'm Going!", leave a comment, or email me at jenblackledge at gmail.com

The first blogger meetup was a big success! Since then there's been a lot of growth and new folks have popped up in our local "blogosphere". Meetups like this are a nice chance for all of us to gather, unwind, and put some faces together with the blogs.

This event is primarily intended for bloggers who wish to meet other bloggers. If you don't have a blog, then this may not be the get-together for you. So, if you just can't stand not being there and don't already have a blog... what are you waiting for?!

Sunshine

Is it spring? If not, it sure feels like it!

Stellar's Jay

The birds have taken over our backyard, much to the delight of our cat. He seems to think that the dining room window is a "bird TV". He will sit on the sill for hours, chirruping and singing to the jays, robins, and other backyard visitors. He has no desire to actually go outside and chase them though. Thank goodness, he's way to fat and lazy for that!

We spent midday sitting in the sun, watching lacrosse at Mountain View High School. It was pretty easy to follow, and what a beautiful afternoon. It's a bit hazy to the west, due to the preventative burns. Other than that, it was very pleasant and warm. I can finally wear sandals outside again!

Lacrosse

Tonight we (well, "we grownups"... the kids will be home with a sitter) are off to a birthday party. It's planned for somewhere with a deck, so we can spend more time outside.

I guess it's time to dig out the sunscreen!

Tulips

I like flowers. Not necessarily the kind sent in a bouquet. Usually the kind that I can enjoy in my yard, and occasionally snip to bring inside. I wish these were from my garden, but they're not. I bought these at Trader Joe's (only $2.99 a bunch!) about a week ago. I think tulips are at their most interesting and beautiful just before they drop their petals, like these!

Tulips

Yes, you read this right. It's still snowing in Bend. In April. Even for Bend, that's late for there to be snow in town. My poor tulips don't know what to do. Mine are only a few inches tall, and started to lose hope that they will ever bloom this year. One day, it's 60 degrees and spring-like outside. The next day (or two or three) it snows again. At this point, I don't dare hope that they will find it in their little flower souls to bloom this year. If I were them, I would be pissed too.

On the other hand, the lilac bushes still seem to be doing OK. They are somewhat sheltered, against the South side of the house. They are growing, spreading, and putting out new leaves. From what I have heard lilacs like a good, cold winter. I wonder how they like a good, cold spring?

Bounce

Christopher Robin: You're next, Tigger. Jump!
Tigger: Jump? Tiggers don't jump. They bounce.

Bouncing... it's not just for Tiggers. Or for toddlers and "little kids". Today, we all bounced. Sometimes, we bounced up high. We bounced on slides, steps and mushrooms. We bounced in castles, elephants, and an obstacle course. They bounced balls, bounced on hippity-hops, hula-hooped, and balanced on pogo balls. The kids bounced for close to three hours. I took many, many breaks. It turns out bouncing is hard work!!

Therefore we are all very, very tired.
